How it Works

Botox® neurotoxin is a purified protein that helps control sweating by blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that activate the sweat glands. These are typically stimulated to produce perspiration in response to an increase in body temperature. However, in individuals with excessive sweating, the nerves that signal the sweat glands are overactive. When Botox is injected into a specific area, the sweat glands at the injection site no longer receive chemical signals, thereby preventing perspiration from being produced.

What areas can be treated by Botox®?

Botox® injections work well for nearly all cases of underarm sweating. Most people achieve a 90% reduction in sweating.

BOTOX® is a highly effective treatment for excessive sweating. If you are embarrassed by sweat stains, or if perspiration is causing you to feel uncomfortable in certain social situations, then Botox injections may be a good treatment option for you.

Greater than 80% of patients treated with Botox® achieve a significant reduction in sweating. Botox® treatment for hyperhidrosis has been scientifically proven to improve on-the-job productivity. The treatment consistently results in meaningful, long-lasting improvements in daily function and quality of life.

During your appointment, you will meet with a health care provider who will perform an assessment, discuss your medical history and answer any questions you may have. A typical treatment involves a series of injections to the treatment area. The number of injections will vary depending on the size of the area affected. A small amount of Botox solution is injected into the affected area through a very fine needle. The needle is placed just under the skin, so you may experience some injection-related discomfort, but it is usually very well tolerated.

How long will the results last?

Results start to be noticeable approximately 2 to 4 days after treatment. The full effect of Botox is usually achieved within 2 weeks. Dryness typically lasts 4 to 12 months, depending on how fast the body takes to metabolize the BOTOX®. Some patients have even found that results can last as long as 14 months. On average, our patients come to us for treatment twice a year.

Does it hurt?

Our trained physicians ensure that there is minimal to no pain during the injections, although you may experience some injection related discomfort.

How long does the treatment take?

The length of treatment depends on the area being treated. On average, the treatments are completed in 10 to 20 minutes.

How long does it take to reduce sweating?

The reduction in sweating begins to take effect in the first few days, but it may take up to 1 week to reach full effectiveness.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects, if they occur, are temporary. These commonly include minor bruising and swelling at the injection site. We have also observed that there can be temporary weakening of the fine muscles of the hands in some individuals who have had injections in the palms. Other reported side effects include dry mouth, tiredness, headache, neck pain, and dry eyes.
